Wayne Lineker, owner of the now World famous Linkers brand, came originally from Leicester, England. After the birth of his two sons, who now both work for the company; Wayne decided he wanted a better life and future for his family. Answering Instinct, he boldly took the step of moving to Spain to pursue his dream…owning a bar in Tenerife.
Wayne had come up with a new and exciting concept having observed the continuing success and ever developing fame of his brother Gary Lineker. He felt he could successfully mix the best elements of a dedicated sports pub and lively music bar to create a new type of social experience.
A New Concept is Born
Linekers Bar was founded in 1988 in Las Americas, Tenerife. The original bar was located within a busy strip of bars locally known as "The Patch" and was declared open under the name "Gary Linekers Sportman's Bar".
The experimental, maiden bar on "The Patch" rapidly developed into a must - visit venue and the popularity and attraction caused by the famous Linekers name soon grew beyond the capacity of the premises. Wayne shrewdly decided to stay ahead of the wave of success that his bar was riding on… and relocated to a bigger venue, where it still stands today.
The new venue was re-named "Linekers Bar" and the magnetic, trademark mix of visitors music, entertainment, sport and non stop party atmosphere that Wayne had created in the original venue, continued to flourish. Wayne knew he held huge potential in his hands, when the capacity crowd overflowed during the 1990 World cup in Italy. People were queuing out the doors in the hope of getting their hands on a highly valued t-shirt!
Riding the Wave of Success
With the seemingly unstoppable growth of Linekers in Tenerife and the continuing success of Gary Lineker, who was by this time captain of the English football team, Wayne decided to open another Linekers bar in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria. With his recipe for success now perfected and with the experience of Linekers Tenerife under his belt, Puerto Rico was an instant success, with more of a family feel being concentrated into the premises.
After this hat trick of success, Wayne felt he had a brand that was capable of eminence wherever he chose to locate it. Once again his instinct was correct. Soon people started to approach him to acquire about the rights to franchise the name. This interest led to the incredible achievement of having destinations such as Magaluf, Puerto del Carmen and Benidorm open and prospering in a very short space of time.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Wayne's next personal venture led him to Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol, where he opened the next Linekers Bar in 1994. It was an instant success with expats and tourists alike.
Wayne's continued confidently ahead with the growth of his empire with new premises opening in resorts such as Cala Dor (Majorca) in '95, Albufiera (Portugal) '95 and Alcudia (Majorca) in '97.
The next stage in this growth was a crucial one. Along with his business partner Paul Bowcock, they decided to open Linekers Bar, Puerto Banus.
Although Puerto Banus was not an instant success, Wayne and Paul held onto their dream and persevered with unstoppable tenacity and patience through a tough year to make it into what it is today… probably the most famous bar in Puerto Banus, as well as being the most successful of all the Linekers Bars.
The Puerto Banus venture surpassed all expectations and rapidly became an empire within an empire. During a record breaking run of development in 2004, Wayne and partners opened a string of top class bars in the glamorous surrounds of Puerto Banus, which include "Premier" a classy lap dance lounge, "Disco Inferno" a highly popular 70's and 80's theme bar and "Portside Café" which also shows coverage of all the major live sporting events
The Biggest and Best Party Destinations
During that same prolific year of 2004, party capital Ayia Napa in Cyprus became home to the next Linekers bar. This venue is now widely renowned as the place to be for a non stop party atmosphere!
In 2005 Wayne acquired the bar in Playa del Ingles, Gran Canaria, after a long legal battle over the misuse of the trademark name Linekers bar, he won the case and was awarded sole rights.
In 2006 Wayne felt there was still one destination on the Costa del Sol where Linekers would thrive. Benalmadena was born and with the opening timed to coincide with the 2006 World Cup, it was busy and buzzing from day one!
Wayne's next dream was to establish the Linekers Bar name in the world's biggest party destination - Ibiza. Opened in May '08, this venue will unmistakably ascend to become yet another trademark triumph.
An Un-Stoppable Winning Combination
With Wayne's wealth of knowledge, experience and growing number of successful partnerships as well as friends and family behind him, his brand will no doubt continue in its ever evolving growth and development.
Wayne believes his success in the bar industry is not solely down to having a famous brother (although he admits it did help). He states it is due to the unique atmosphere within a modern bar designed for comfort and the eclectic mix of sports coverage and variety of shows and entertainment from British d.j.'s and staff alike. Every member of the Linekers Bar team is committed to a no- holds- barred holiday experience!
